Ontario winter travel: getting to the airport when the weather turns
Why SUVs, earlier pickups and a phone call from dispatch matter more between December and March than any other feature of the service.

Winter changes the arithmetic
A route that takes forty minutes in September takes seventy in a February squall, and the variance is worse than the average. Between December and March we quote earlier pickups for the same flights, and we would rather you waited comfortably airside than watched a departure board from the 427.
Vehicle class matters more in winter
We assign SUVs by default in the hill and escarpment areas - Caledon, Halton Hills, Orangeville, Collingwood and Muskoka - from December through March. Ride height, all-wheel drive and proper winter tyres are not a luxury on those roads in January; they are the reason the trip happens at all.
Lake-effect snow is local and vicious
Snow off Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay can bury one corridor while another stays clear. A trip from Barrie may be far harder than a trip from Oshawa on the same morning. Local operators know which routes get hit and plan around them; algorithms generally do not.
What good dispatch does in a storm
It calls you. If the road conditions mean your pickup needs to move thirty minutes earlier, you should hear that the night before or first thing in the morning - not discover it when the car is late. Ask an operator what they do in a snow event before you need the answer.
De-icing and knock-on delays
Even a perfect drive can meet a two-hour de-icing queue at Pearson. Airlines rarely cancel early in a storm, so the useful posture is to travel to the airport as planned, arrive early, and let the airline sort the schedule out with you inside the terminal rather than from a car park.
