The Toronto dates that close roads, and how to travel through them
A year of Toronto events that reshape traffic - the Indy, Caribana, the CNE, TIFF, the Royal, marathon Sunday - with the transport approach that works for each.

Summer belongs to Exhibition Place
From July onward the Exhibition grounds run almost continuously: the Honda Indy closes Lake Shore and Strachan for a week in July, the Caribbean Carnival parade takes Lake Shore in early August, and the CNE fills the site until Labour Day. All three share one constraint - Lake Shore Boulevard is the only real artery, and when it goes, every alternative fills instantly.
September and the festival crush
TIFF reshapes the entertainment district for ten days, and the Niagara Grape & Wine Festival pulls a large share of weekend traffic down the QEW at the same time. If you are travelling to Niagara-on-the-Lake on a September Saturday, add an hour to whatever the map says.
Autumn and winter downtown
The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair returns to Exhibition Place in November, in the worst month for weather, and the Canadian International AutoShow takes over both Metro Toronto Convention Centre buildings in February. Both are cases where a private car removes a parking problem that costs more in time than the fare does in money.
Marathon Sunday and the unadvertised closures
The events that catch people out are not the big ones - everybody plans around the Indy. It is the marathon, the ride-for-a-cause and the street festival that closed six blocks with a week's notice. This is where a local operator earns the fare: we check the city's closure notices the morning of travel rather than discovering them at the intersection.
The approach that works for all of them
Three habits cover almost every event: book hourly rather than point-to-point when the evening has more than one stop; agree the collection point away from the venue rather than at it; and give the venue name, not just the address. Our attractions and venues guide lists the drop-off quirks for ninety-five Ontario sites.
