Toronto to Niagara Falls by private car: timings, stops and what it costs you in time
The QEW run to the Falls - realistic timings, where to stop, whether to cross to the American side, and how a private car compares with a coach tour.

Ninety minutes, most of the time
Toronto to Niagara Falls is roughly ninety minutes down the QEW outside peak. Friday afternoons and summer Sundays are materially worse, and a September Saturday during the wine festival can add an hour in either direction. We plan the departure around the day, not the distance.
Private car versus a coach tour
A coach tour is cheaper per head and runs to somebody else's schedule, with a fixed number of stops and a fixed amount of time at each. A private car costs more and gives you the order, the timings and the ability to leave when you have had enough. For two or three travellers, once you count the coach's pickup point and its return time, the gap is smaller than it looks.
Where to actually stop
Niagara Parks controls the parkway and most of the attractions, and the drop-off points move with events. Table Rock for the Falls themselves, Journey Behind the Falls if you have booked timed entry, and the Butterfly Conservatory further up the parkway. Niagara-on-the-Lake is twenty minutes on and worth the detour.
Crossing to the American side
The view from the American side is genuinely different, and it is also a border crossing. Every passenger needs a passport or NEXUS card, children included, and it must be declared when you book so the trip is arranged as a cross-border journey. It cannot be decided at the bridge.
Combining the Falls with wine country
The common mistake is treating the Falls as an afternoon and still expecting four wineries. Pick one to lead: the Falls plus two estates, or four estates plus an hour at Table Rock on the way home. Our Niagara wine tour day is built around the second shape.
